Intercostal retractions or intercostal recessions are inward movement of muscles between the ribs (intercostal muscles) due to airway obstruction, resulting in the use of accessory muscles of respiration. Accessory muscles of respiration include the sternocleidomastoid, scalene, trapezius, internal intercostal, and abdominal muscles.
