You KNOW what position you need to be in, but it hurts to get there... what do? I get this all the time, especially on posts about things like foot position or hip rotation. I'll get comments like "It hurts when I try and do that..." or "I can't move that way so I just don't try..." And I get it can be a challenge when you're instructor is saying one thing, and your body is saying another. But the key to remember here is that just because something is hard to achieve in the saddle, DOES NOT mean

An unstable or unintentionally displaced lower leg during downward transitions can send mixed signals to a horse. I call these “clashing aids.” If, for instance, a rider squeezes with the lower leg behind the girth (or even brushes that area on a sensitive horse) while asking with the rein aids for the horse to come back, the horse will be confused and the transition will be anything but smooth. In this lesson, I demonstrate this common mistake and show how to achieve prompt downward transitions

Let’s talk about the three leg positions in riding. The leg position of a rider is the first thing I notice and address before proceeding with further instruction. A solid foundation in the tack begins with the lower leg, and I am a huge advocate of the forward seat with proper leg position in the hunter/jumper discipline. This clip will describe our three leg positions in riding: 1. The normal leg; 2. The displacing leg; 3. The braced or leveraged leg. It’s a common observation at my clinics th

Mounting from the Ground Part Six: Leg Strength What do we actually need to mount from the ground? I did a post looking at the mobility & strength demands of mounting from the ground a while ago, and despite the controversy of *gasp* not using a mounting block, I still firmly maintain that the ability to mount from the ground on BOTH sides is not only a safety thing, but is also a good screen of our mobility & strength. So these videos are intended to help you screen and work on these requiremen

How do you apply your lower leg? How much have you really thought about it? When we are taught to ride, our coaches, usually cue us to “squeeze our legs“ to get the horse to move forward. While that is fine for a novice, often it is not greatly refined or differently taught as we progress in our skills. Most of us still rely quite heavily on our hamstrings to pull our lower leg back, our adductors to squeeze our knees in, and our hip flexors to pull our thigh up when trying to apply the lower le

As I always say, a solid foundation in the tack begins with the lower leg. So let’s talk about one of the key basics of correct leg position: A common fault I find at clinics is the lack of heel depth and improper placement of the foot in the stirrup. The foot should be placed in the stirrup just over the ball or slightly in front of the ball should one have a less flexible ankle, and a toe angle of 10-30 degrees. Typically, 10-30 degrees is normal, but of course it’s according to your conformat

What does an old ankle sprain have to do with an unstable lower leg? Sometimes, nothing at all—but in this case, it might have quite a lot to do with it! During a recent assessment, we discovered a few interesting things. My client’s dorsiflexion (that “heels down” or “knees over toes” range) was limited on their right ankle. On top of that, their right lower leg struggled with stability and toed out more noticeably compared to their left. After some discussion (and a look at their riding videos

🤔 What is the proper leg position for the canter? To task your horse for canter, you should bring your outside leg slightly behind the girth, while the inside leg should be at the girth. 👉 This leg positioning is crucial for indicating to the horse which lead you want, and is especially important if you are teaching the flying changes. 💯 Interested in learning more about how to teach or troubleshoot the flying changes? ✈️ Comment “flying changes” below and I’ll send you the link to my Flying

🐎 Struggling to understand how to use your leg aids correctly? Here’s a quick tip to help you!Think of your horse’s body as staying between your legs. 🌉 When they’re going where you want, your legs should be passive. But if they fall in or out, they should run into your leg. 👉 If your leg is always on, your horse will eventually tune it out. I picked up this super helpful tip from Laura Ashley Dressage —go check out her account if you haven’t already! ✨💬 Need more help with your rider positi

🐴 Struggling with your canter transitions or getting the wrong lead?💪🏻 Your leg position matters! The aid for the canter starts with your inside leg at the girth and your outside leg behind the girth.🐎 This isn’t just about cueing the canter—it’s how you tell your horse which lead to pick up. The inside leg creates the energy, and the outside leg helps your horse strike off on the correct lead. 💯🎯 When you are clearer with your canter aids, your canter transition will be so much easier.
