Victorian Skirt lifter! Here are some recent river finds which took me back to the misty mornings of another time. Popular from the 1840s through to the early 20th century, the skirt lifter was used to lift heavy trained skirts off the ground. Keeping your expensive garments clean and away from the muddy street (and remain socially acceptable) meant using one or both hands to keep the skirts elevated.
